About Awaji Island


Awaji Island (淡路島 Awaji-shima) is an island in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshu and Shikoku. The island has an area of 592.17 km² and is the largest of the Inland Sea’s islands.

Awaji originally means “the road to Awa” the historic province bordering the Shikoku side of the Naruto Strait, now part of Tokushima Prefecture.


The summer generally peaks and 30.3°C (86.5°F) during the summer but due the lack of man made structures  there is no “heat island” phenomenon at night so the  summer is comparatively mild compared with other places in the Kansai region. Winters are mild and with almost no snowfall. The island is generally warm throughout the year with an average temperature around 15°C (59°F). However the the winter winds sometimes can be  strong.

There is little rainfall, so there is often a shortage of water and Awaji island has one of the highest number of  man made reservoirs in Japan.

The island is not really typhoon path however we do get hit by a couple a year but due the natural buffer the island of Shikoku offers major hits are rare.

Geographical Features

Mountains and hills take up about 65 percent of the island with a highest mountain Yuzuruha mountain chiming in at a humble  608m (1995f)


The island’s fauna includes mammals such as deer (far to many) , wild pigs (yum) , Japanese monkeys, and tanuki  and many wild birds. Japanese honey bees survive in the wild because of lack the forestry and abundance of flowering trees.


Awaji is known as the birth place of Japan and in ancient times a country that contributed food to the ancient Imperial Court.
